A little under two miles of wall runs round the old city, and it is the most complete circuit of Roman and medieval town wall left in Britain. The whole thing is a scheduled monument and most of it is listed at Grade I. Yards and gardens in the centre back onto it in places, which makes the boundary at the end of the plot older than the house, older than the street, and not the owner's to alter.
