A weir has held the river up at the Old Dee Bridge since ten ninety three, when it was built to give the mills their head of water, and it is also what stops the tide. Most of the year the Dee above it sits at a steady level while the water below rises and falls twice a day. On the biggest spring tides the sea gets over the top and backs up as far as the Groves. Flood water on that stretch is not entirely fresh, which is worth knowing before anything goes back into a bed that has been under it.
