Handbridge stands on a red sandstone outcrop and the Romans took their building stone straight out of it. The fortress wall and a great deal of what stood inside it came from that one working, and the quarrying carried on into the late fourth century. What they left is a rock face in the middle of a public park, with a figure of Minerva cut into it and a hollow in the stone beside her. Chester is a city built largely out of a hole on its own south bank.
