Bristol moved its river to keep its ships afloat. Between eighteen oh four and eighteen oh nine a channel about two miles long was dug by hand through the fields of Bedminster to carry the tide, and the old course behind it was shut off with lock gates and held at one level as the Floating Harbour. Seventy acres of water stand at a constant height because of that dig. The tide it took away rises and falls by better than forty feet, on an estuary with one of the largest tidal ranges in the world.
