There was coal under the east side of Bristol and it was got out for a long time. The coalfield runs beneath the eastern parts of the city and on north into south Gloucestershire, and there were pits within half a mile of the old town, at Upper and Lower Easton and near Lawrence Hill. The last Bristol colliery closed in nineteen sixty three. Digging on that side of the city is digging over ground somebody has already been under.
