Rock salt was found in boreholes at Stafford in 1891 and a works opened on Stafford Common two years after that. The salt came up as natural brine, pumped from below, and the pumping was stopped in 1970 because the ground was subsiding. The Geological Survey's own position is that the underground extent of the Stafford Halite is imprecisely known and that it runs thin and poor at the margins. The common is the north end of the town, and the works there ran the better part of eighty years.
