Shugborough is about six miles east of Stafford with the Sow running behind the hall and the Trent joining it close by at Essex Bridge. Thomas Anson spent much of the 1700s on the landscaping and had almost nothing to work with, because the land out there is flat. Trees, water and buildings carry the whole design instead. That is the standing problem in this valley: where there is no slope, the planting has to do the job the ground will not.
