The walled garden at Darley Park holds the national collection of Hydrangea paniculata. Planting began in 1984 at the request of Plant Heritage, whose work is stopping garden varieties from dropping out of cultivation, and volunteers have run the beds alongside the city's parks department since 2010. It is worth an hour before anybody settles on a shrub for a border, because it shows what forty years of one genus in this ground and this weather actually comes to.
