The rock under Derby is a calcareous red-brown mudstone, which is a geologist's way of saying there is lime in it. Soils sitting over it tend to run neutral or slightly alkaline rather than acid. Rhododendrons, camellias and blueberries all want acid ground, so across most of the city they have to be grown in a bed made up for them or in a pot.
