The Park was the castle's deer park before it was anything else. The fourth Duke of Newcastle began building on it in eighteen twenty two, the first houses went up on Park Terrace around eighteen twenty nine, and Thomas Chambers Hine put a tunnel through the rock to get carriages out to Derby Road. The roads in there still belong to the estate rather than the council, the street lighting is gas and thought to be one of the largest networks left in Europe, and the whole of it has been a conservation area since nineteen sixty nine.
