The Forest Recreation Ground is eighty acres of Sherwood Forest, set aside for public use by the St Mary's Nottingham Inclosure Act of eighteen forty five. The ground it covers was known as the Lings and it was gorse and scrub rather than trees, because a forest in the old sense was a jurisdiction and not a wood. There was a racecourse on it by seventeen seventy three, and the course did not move out to Colwick until the end of the nineteenth century. Anybody expecting old timber on the one piece of Sherwood inside the city is looking in the wrong place.
