The Hemlock Stone stands on Stapleford Hill, on the far side of Bramcote from the city. It is about twenty eight feet of Triassic sandstone left upright after the ground round it wore away, and what held it up is a mineral. The cap is Nottingham Castle Sandstone with its grains cemented together by baryte, and it sits on Lenton Sandstone that is finer and much less well cemented. The waist worn into the middle of it is the softer bed going first, which is a fair warning against assuming the ground on this hill is all one thing.
