A large northern section of Cannock Chase lies inside Stafford Borough, off to the south east of the town, and some of the oaks standing on it are over four hundred years old. The heath around them is the largest area of lowland heath left in the Midlands and it is a Special Area of Conservation. Age like that changes what anybody sensible does with a tree, because an oak of four hundred is worth keeping standing and hollow rather than taking down tidy.
