Vale Street in Totterdown is usually named as the steepest residential street in England. The terraces on that hill went up in the second half of the nineteenth century for men working on the railway, and whoever built them took the slope as they found it. Gardens on that ground are not flat anywhere, so the usable part has to be cut into steps and held there.
