The high ground on the north west side of the city is Carboniferous limestone, laid down in a shallow tropical sea about three hundred and fifty million years ago. The Avon has cut a gorge through it at Clifton and, a few miles north, the Hazel Brook has cut a smaller one through the same rock at Blaise. Soil over that stone comes thin and limy, and it loses water downwards as fast as it loses it off the top, which is why a dry fortnight tells on those gardens first.
