The rock at Groby is Precambrian, in the order of six hundred million years old, and it is still being quarried there for roadstone as it is at Markfield and Whitwick up the road. Most of the ground round Leicester has Triassic mudstone under it instead, younger by hundreds of millions of years. The Charnwood hills were buried under that desert and the weather has been taking the cover back off ever since. Digging on this side of the city can come up against solid rock far sooner than anybody planned for, while the same hole a few miles east finds nothing but clay.
