W. G. Hoskins arrived at University College, Leicester in nineteen thirty one and founded the department of English local history there. The Making of the English Landscape came out in nineteen fifty five and his essay on Leicestershire two years after it. What he was arguing is that a field, a hedge or a lane is a record of what has already been done to it. Most of the evidence he read that way is the sort that survives in an ordinary back garden: a bank, a change of level, a hedge line that does not agree with the fence.
