Whole streets of inner Birmingham were built without a garden anywhere in them. The houses stood back to back round a court, and what the families there shared was a brick yard, one tap, a washhouse and the privies at the end of it. Court fifteen off Hurst Street went up in the first thirty years of the nineteenth century and is the last one left standing. Almost all the others had gone by the early nineteen seventies, so any garden on that ground is newer than the clearance that made room for it.
