Out on the north west edge of the city the ditches have a name of their own. A rhyne is a drainage ditch cut to take water off low ground, and there are rhynes still running through Lawrence Weston Moor, which is about twelve hectares of wet meadow kept as a local nature reserve in the middle of a housing estate. That ground is the edge of the Severn flood plain. A boundary out there is as likely to be a ditch as a fence, and a ditch that gets filled in has to put its water somewhere else.
