The flat green outside the walls on the west side of the centre was a working harbour once. Roman ships came up the Dee and unloaded at the Roodee, and the landward end of the estuary has been silting up ever since, which is how sixty five acres of level ground came to sit where there had been deep water. What lies under it is river silt rather than soil, and it is as flat as ground in a city ever gets.
