The wall round medieval Coventry ran a little over two miles and had twelve gates in it. Work started in the thirteen fifties and it was not finished until 1534. In 1662 Charles II had it pulled down, because the city had held for Parliament in the civil war. Two gates and a few short lengths are all of it left above ground.
