Inside the inner ring road the first few metres of ground are not natural. The Geological Survey records several metres of made and disturbed ground across the old centre, one round of development and rebuilding laid over the last, and calls it a mixture of building rubble, dug-out rock and soil, and refuse. Fills of up to eight metres are on record around the city. Those levels were made, not found.
