The old oaks in Bradgate Park are pollards. They were cut back to a stump well above the ground so the regrowth stayed out of reach of the deer, and that is most of the reason trees of several hundred years are still standing out there. Five hundred and fifty red and fallow deer graze the eight hundred and thirty acres now, and it is the only medieval deer park in Leicestershire. A pollard is a tree kept on a cycle rather than a tree left alone, and the cycle does not end when the last person who kept it does.
