South of the city centre the Soar is joined by the Biam, and the ground where they meet at Aylestone has been grazed rather than built on for as long as there is any record of it. A medieval packhorse bridge still crosses there, built narrow and with passing places, because goods had to be got over ground that goes under water. That is the flood plain, and its edge has not moved since somebody decided a stone bridge was worth paying for.
