Coventry's own building stone came out of the ground at Whitley, on the south side of the city. It is Bromsgrove Sandstone, and the old cathedral, St Michael's, is thought to have been built from it. The stone is weakly cemented and a good deal weaker wet than dry, so work in it gets patched over the years with harder stone from Hollington in Staffordshire or Grinshill in Shropshire. The new cathedral is Hollington stone.
