East and south Bristol stand on Pennant sandstone. It is hard and fine grained, blue-grey where it is fresh, and it sits in the upper part of the coal measures. It is also the grey stone in a great many walls and pavements on this side of the city. Where it comes near the surface a border turns up more stone than soil, and the ground over it does not carry the lime that the far side of Bristol does.
