A network of drains was cut into the Sow across the low ground outside the town centre in the later nineteenth century, and the brooks along the Penk were canalised below Acton Trussell for the same reason. It did not settle the matter. That ground still floods, and grass on it stays soft for weeks after the streets in the middle of Stafford have dried out.
