Derby stands at the point where the old Derbyshire rock runs out. The Carboniferous beds that make the gritstone edges and the limestone of the White Peak dip under Triassic clay and sandstone along roughly a line between Ashbourne and the city. You can read that off the boundary walls without needing a map: brick down here, gritstone once you are up the Derwent valley, limestone again further north. Walling stone for a garden in Derby has to be carted in, which is most of why a stone wall costs more here than it does where it came out of the ground.
