The old municipal golf course at Allestree is being let go deliberately. Derby City Council and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust started a rewilding scheme there after a public consultation in 2022, and it is the largest urban rewilding project in the country. Mowing has stopped across most of the site and Highland cattle are grazing it. Nobody is planting the young trees now coming up, which makes it the one big green space in Derby where the canopy is choosing its own shape.
