Eight miles south of Derby there is a formal garden the eighteenth century forgot to sweep away. Thomas Coke had it made from 1704, with advice and stock from the royal gardeners London and Wise, and the fashion for pulling out parterres and allées and laying parkland in their place never reached it. What stands now is close to what a map of 1722 shows: the long yew tunnel, the pools and fountains, and Robert Bakewell's wrought iron Birdcage at the head of the walk. Market gardens were one of the town's own trades for generations, and only a handful of the holdings are left.
