Derby Arboretum went in on flat ground in 1840, and the mounds running through it were thrown up on purpose, partly to screen the walks from one another and partly to lift the specimen trees to where people could look at them properly. The rule was one of everything. Over eight hundred different sorts of hardy tree and shrub were planted in family groups, and visitors could buy a catalogue naming the lot for a shilling. Ten of the trees on the tree trail there have stood since that first planting.
