Izaak Walton was born in Stafford in 1593, bought a place at Shallowford in the 1650s, and on his death in 1683 left it for the benefit of the poor of the town. The cottage is still there, listed at grade two, and there is a knot garden beside it. A knot is low hedging clipped into a pattern and meant to be looked at from above, which is how a small plot was made to look like something in the days before anybody had a mower.
