The town council bought fifty seven acres of marsh between the river and the canal from the Earl of Dysart in eighteen seventy six. Making Abbey Park out of it meant widening and deepening the Soar for about a mile, and the spoil off that dig went into the mounds the paths now run over. The park opened in eighteen eighty two. The high ground in it is dug river bed. The flat ground round it is marsh with grass on top.
