The rock under a great deal of Nottingham holds water, and for a long stretch it was the water the city drank. The Corporation sank wells two hundred feet into the sandstone and built the works at Papplewick between eighteen eighty one and eighteen eighty four to lift it, a million and a half gallons a day off each pump. Ground that gives up water on that scale is ground that lets water through, which is the opposite of the problem in clay. A hole here drains instead of filling, and whatever goes into the ground round a post does not stop at the bottom of the hole.
