The round-headed leek is sold as a border bulb and it holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In England it grows wild in one place only, which is the Avon Gorge, and that is why it is known here as the Bristol onion. Somebody planting it in a garden in this city is putting in a bulb that is a national rarity a mile or two up the road.
