The Botanical Gardens were paid for with shares. A society formed in eighteen thirty three raised seven thousand five hundred pounds in five pound shares, bought nineteen acres of farmland with it and opened the gardens in June eighteen thirty six. Getting in meant holding a share or paying at the gate for most of the rest of that century. The Town Trust took the place on near the end of it, repaid the shareholders the face value of their shares and dropped the charge, and it owns the ground still.
