Stafford Castle stands on the hill west of the town on what the record calls modified glacial deposit. The Normans found a natural mound up there in the 1070s and cut it about until it was the shape they wanted, so the earliest landscaping done in Stafford was done with a spade and no plants in it at all. The old town below lies on a tongue of marl and gravel with alluvium all round it, which is not the same ground as the hill in any way that matters to a build.
