The detached gardens on the hill above St Ann's are the most extensive surviving site of their kind in England, and they are on the register at grade two star. Three blocks of them run across the slope, Hungerhill, Stonepit Coppice and Gorseyclose, something over seven hundred plots on about eighty acres between them. The hillside was terraced to get level ground, and every plot is shut in by its own hedge, which is the thing that marks the place out from an ordinary allotment field. A good many of them still have their Victorian summerhouse standing at the top end.
