A wild flower called Nottingham catchfly took the name from growing on the walls of the castle. It is gone from there, and from the rest of the city and the county with it, so the plant carrying the town's name is no longer found anywhere near the town. It opens at night, three nights to a flower, and the scent is put out for moths rather than for anybody standing in front of it. What it wants is dry open ground, and it will take acid or lime, which is not a difficult brief for anybody minded to put it back.
