Chellaston, on the south edge of the city, was one of the country's main sources of alabaster. Alabaster is gypsum, it lay close enough to the surface there to be quarried, and from the fourteenth century it was carved into church monuments and shipped across Europe. Gypsum runs through the mudstone under the rest of Derby as well, and sulphate in solution in ground like that can attack concrete, which the British Geological Survey flags as a hazard on this formation. That is a reason to think about the mix as well as the depth when a row of posts is going into wet clay.
