War Memorial Park was Styvechale Common before it was a park. The city agreed to buy the land from the Gregory-Hood family for thirty one thousand pounds in December 1919 and opened it in July 1921. Planting began in 1925 and people bought the trees as memorials, each with a plaque of its own. Around eight hundred memorial trees stand there now.
