Lady Herbert's Garden went in between 1930 and 1939 on ground just cleared of slum housing, where Chantry Orchard had been. Alfred Herbert, who made machine tools in the city, paid for it as a memorial to his second wife Florence, and his cousin Albert Herbert designed it. The east half opened in April 1931 and the west went in between 1935 and 1938. The council has had it since 1974.
