Ecclesall Woods on the south west side is the largest ancient semi-natural woodland in South Yorkshire, about three hundred and fifty acres of it, and it was a fuel crop before it was anything else. Something like a hundred charcoal hearths and two hundred Q-pits have been found in there. A Q-pit is the round pit with a channel off one side where wood was dried into white coal, which is what English lead smelters burned from the middle of the fifteen hundreds to the end of the sixteen hundreds. A headstone in the wood marks a wood collier who died when his cabin caught fire in seventeen eighty six, and the stone itself is listed.
