More than two thousand rented garden plots ringed the middle of this town in eighteen thirty one. They were hedged off from one another and most carried a summerhouse of brick or timber, and they were taken by the year, a walk out from the streets rather than attached to anything. One set is left, off Westbourne Road in Edgbaston, laid out in eighteen forty four on the southern third of the Botanical Gardens and now on the national register at grade two. Its summerhouses were pulled down in the nineteen seventies.
