The ground south of the city was enclosures and meadow in sixteen fifty one rather than open field, which is why the accounts of the fighting there are full of hedges. The best preserved stretch runs from Powick Bridge down to where the Teme meets the Severn, and it is still open farmland. Later building took most of the rest, north and east of the city, and Perry Wood is one of the few pieces of that side left undeveloped.
