A ditch older than the city runs six miles across the south of it. Nico Ditch was dug somewhere between the end of Roman Britain and the Norman conquest, four or five yards wide and five feet deep, and the excavations of the nineteen nineties came down on the side of a boundary marker rather than a defence. Most of the line has been filled and built over. A hundred and fifty yards of it was scheduled in nineteen ninety seven and the rest carries no protection at all.
