The Berkeleys have been at Spetchley, a few miles east of the city, since Rowland Berkeley bought the place in sixteen oh five. Much of the thirty acre garden there was developed by Ellen Willmott, whose sister Rose had married into the family. Willmott was one of the first two women given the Victoria Medal of Honour, in eighteen ninety seven, the other being Gertrude Jekyll, and better than sixty plants still carry her name or her own garden's.
