There has been a house at Scraptoft since the sixteen hundreds, and the one standing now was built in seventeen twenty three for Lady Letitia Wigley out of the older one. Her son James came into it in seventeen forty six and laid out the gardens and the ornamental lake. Leicester Corporation bought the place in nineteen fifty four for a teacher training college, the college shut in two thousand and three, and the buildings came down and houses went up on the grounds. Gardens on that estate sit inside what was an eighteenth century pleasure ground, and the ground under them has been turned over twice already.
