Two rock formations on the geological map are named after places in this city, the Coventry Sandstone and the Tile Hill Mudstone. Where the sandstone has weathered, the iron and quartz cementing it have let go, and what is left is weak sandy ground with harder cobbles of the same stone still sitting in it. Those lift out by hand. The mudstone under the middle and west of Coventry carries no cobbles at all and is red-brown, fine and heavy.
