Two places in the city show how close the rock can come. Where the Dee turns west at the foot of the town it runs out through a shallow gorge cut into stone, and north of the walls the canal does the same job by hand, in a narrow cutting hewn out of solid rock with a staircase of three locks dropping away at the end of it. Elsewhere there are many feet of glacial drift over the same sandstone. Depth to anything solid is a question worth asking here before a price is put on a job.
